Short Description

Students will pursue an independent, in depth research project on a relevant topic, related to their particular research interest in music. They will complete a substantial piece of work, which will present their original research and demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of their field of study.


4 x tutorial hours with supervisor.

Requirements of Entry

A candidate will be permitted to progress to preparation of the dissertation only if he or she has obtained a grade point average of 12 (equivalent to C3) or above in the taught courses, with at least 75% of the credits at grade D3 or better and all credits at grade F or above.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ develop and sustain an argument in an area of the student's personal research interest in Music studies

■ promote an engagement with other scholarly, critical, conceptual or theoretical arguments relevant to that area

■ enable the student to gain experience in research, and in the organisation and interpretation of information

■ encourage the application of acquired research skills to a supervised project

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ define, plan and execute a sustained, focused, coherent and original research project in an area relevant to Music;

■ source, select and critically evaluate appropriate primary and secondary sources in their chosen subject area and then utilise such sources effectively within the final dissertation;

■ utilise substantial and detailed first-hand knowledge of their chosen area of investigation;

■ apply appropriate academic conventions with regard to referencing and provision of bibliographic information;

■ work independently to execute a substantial piece of written work in clear and appropriate academic English.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
