Short Description

This course extends and enhances students' compositional, digital and creative skills. Through small group seminars, labs and workshops, it introduces a range of advanced techniques and methods, expanding students' compositional palette and creative resources, exploring these through the creation of short compositional exercises.


2 hour seminar/workshop per week x 10 weeks, fortnightly 1 hour tutorials x 5, and fortnightly 3 hour supervised workshop/lab session x 5.

Requirements of Entry

Standard entry to Masters at College level. Students must be proficient in reading and manipulating musical staff notation and have experience of music composition.

Portfolio of five compositional exercises encompassing a range of forms and media (80%)

Critical commentary of 1500 words, which may be in the form of a blog (20%)

Course Aims

This course aims to:


■ build on students' prior musical knowledge, extending skills acquired at undergraduate level for generating and manipulating musical material to an advanced level suitable for professional or research-led composition and creative practice

■ equip students with a range of advanced creative, digital and compositional methods

■ develop independent musical thinking through a range of practical exercises and activities

■ nurture a critical, questioning approach to creative work, challenging assumptions

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:


■ identify and employ a range of creative approaches in realising a portfolio of short musical exercises

■ apply appropriate techniques and processes to making and manipulating sonic and musical materials

■ use a range of digital techniques in the pursuit of compositional and creative goals

■ discuss and critique the approaches taken in their practical work

■ analyse and evaluate the results of their practical work, identifying areas for further refinement or development

■ contextualise their work in the broader field of contemporary musical practice

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
