Short Description

This course introduces Masters students to the interdisciplinary challenges raised by the study of gender as an integral component of the creative arts and provides them with the tools to negotiate these challenges critically through written scholarly argument and oral presentation.

1 Essay of around 3500 words (70%)

1 seminar presentation of around 15 min length (30%)

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ develop students' awareness of gender as an aesthetic and culturally significant consideration within creative practice across a range of disciplines.

■ develop students' understanding of the implicit and explicit operation of gendered constructs or ideologies within cultural debates

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Analyse key questions and debates concerning the role of gender in a range of cultural texts and creative practices at an advanced level.

■ Critically discuss, through effectively argued academic prose, an appropriate range of scholarly literature on gender in the creative arts.

■ Design and deliver a well-structured presentation, demonstrating historical perspective on creative negotiations of genders.

■ Evaluate the role of gender in cultural debates across a range of creative disciplines at an advanced level

■ Apply a range of specialised theories and methods to the study of gender

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
