Short Description

A course for students who wish to further expand their performing abilities through more advanced and extensive study and preparation.


Individual lessons, normally 15 hours total, over 20 weeks, at times to be arranged between students and teacher;

attend at least 10 weekly lunchtime concerts (1.10pm); 10 workshop / masterclasses (3pm) on Thursdays over 20 weeks as scheduled in MyCampus; 5 supervised and 4 unsupervised rehearsals (3pm) on Thursdays over 20 weeks as scheduled in MyCampus

Requirements of Entry

Grade C3 or above in (MUSIC4090) with satisfactory attendance and teachers' reports, and admission into BMus 4


Grade B3 or above in (MUSIC2009) or (MUSIC4029) with satisfactory attendance and teachers' reports, and admission into MA Music 4, BMus4 or BEng4.

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? Not applicable for Honours courses

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

Course Aims

This course will provide the opportunity to:

■ gain experience in the selection, preparation and presentation of a substantial Advanced level performance (or a shorter performance and one group performance exercise) under the supervision of a private teacher, encouraging an advanced level of technical and musical competence as well as imaginative programming and effective stage presence

■ deepen the critical perspective on musical editions and recorded performance traditions previously developed through 'Higher' performance

■ refine the ability to write incisively about the scholarly and creative choices informing the selection, preparation and presentation of any performance recital.

■ (optional) to acquire further skills in group performance activity, and in the organisational and entrepreneurial aspects of music making in relation to public performance.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ identify, select and programme a range of repertoire of Advanced level standard, suited to the student's instrument/s or voice, setting an appropriate level of technical challenge, and identifying reliable editions where necessary.

■ realise the chosen works effectively and with technical command, in stylistically appropriate ways.

■ evaluate performances by listening and responding critically to their own and those of their peers.

■ select suitable musical colleagues in order to plan and rehearse a collaborative musical ensemble (optional).

■ identify and deploy key aspects of stagecraft in performing.

■ identify and deploy administration, management and (optionally) entrepreneurial skills appropriate for the repertoire and performance context.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
