Solely through practical work in composition, this course explores the musical styles and techniques used in the establishment of a 'classical' repertoire in the concert-hall and the private sphere, from the flourishing of the 'sonata style' at around 1780 until the end of the nineteenth century. By emulating historical models you will develop an enhanced familiarity with and understanding of the music of this period.
One hour lecture per week, one hour seminar per week, as scheduled in MyCampus.
Requirements of Entry
D grade in Musical Techniques, Foundation (MUSIC1002 or MUSIC2006)
Composition Intermediate (BMus Only)
Four exercises in style-specific techniques and/or pastiche composition for piano or chamber ensemble of (the equivalent of) roughly 16-32 bars each (each weighted 25%), submitted at specified points through the semesters.
Main Assessment In: April/May

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate, through practical projects, a familiarity with the musical styles and techniques of selected composers between ca. 1780 and 1900.
2. Select and apply aspects of period and style to the exercises at a higher level than Musical Techniques, Foundation (MTQ1).
3. Demonstrate practical skills in music notation and arrangement.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
