Short Description
This course explores the translation of literature and culture and its role in constructing and mediating intercultural communication and identities on the global stage. It evaluates power relations and politics in the translation process, focusing on traditional strategies of literary and cultural translation alongside more contemporary theories of adaptation and rewriting.

Course Aims
The course aims to:
■ encourage students to think critically about the cultural and linguistic issues involved in the translation of literature and culture
■ investigate a range of different case studies across a variety of languages and cultures
■ examine the implications of contemporary translation theories upon translation strategies covered in Translation of Literature and Culture 1
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ assess the application of a range of translation strategies to the process of literary and cultural translation covered in Translation of Literature and Culture 1
■ critically evaluate case studies using relevant theories related to the translation of literature and culture
■ orally present information and develop a sustained written argument drawing from relevant sources and skills acquired in Translation of Literature and Culture 1.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
