Short Description

This course provides an introduction into the world of organisations operating in the social economy (e.g. non-profit, social enterprises) and aims to equip students with the necessary analytical tools to understand how it functions and how it integrates with the rest of the economy. Extensive use is made of case study material to contextualise different economic settings, aiming to develop knowledge, application and practical skills useful for the sector. It will build upon graduate attributes and students will heighten their ethical and social awareness of the contribution of the social economy to the broader business environment.

Timetable

The course will be delivered in the form of a series of lectures and interactive workshops in semester 2, utilizing a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning methods such as videos and podcasts.

Course Aims

The aims of this course are:

■ to introduce students to management of organisations operating within the social economy (e.g. nonprofit and community organisations, social enterprises), and

■ to equip them with an understanding of the environment these organisations inhabit and management challenges they face.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

1. Evaluate the role of a range of social economy organisations in the wider economy.

2. Analyse and compare management approaches and challenges in a range of social economy organisations.

3. Apply management approaches that are useful in the social economy context.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
