Short Description

The purpose of the course is to critically explore the concepts of knowledge management and organisational learning and their application in a range of organisational contexts. In addition, the course will assess the personal and professional skills associated with facilitating organisational learning and implementing knowledge management strategies.

Assessment

The course will be assessed through an individual assignment, supported by a formative learning process. The individual assignment will comprise a 3,000 word essay on the theme of Knowledge Management and Organisational Learning (All ILOs).

Course Aims

The course aims to:

 

1. Develop students' theoretical knowledge of the concepts of organisational learning and knowledge management.

2. Foster critical assessment of the role organisational learning and knowledge management play in realising sustainable competitive advantage in a range of organisational contexts.

3. Encourage students' critical understanding of knowledge management strategies and the complexities associated with facilitating organisational learning and implementing knowledge management strategies and practices.

4. Allow students to develop a critical appreciation of professional practices associated with knowledge management and organisational learning, from an ethical and professional standpoint.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

1. Evaluate in a critical manner the theoretical concepts associated with organisational learning and knowledge management.

2. Critically assess the relative strategic value of knowledge and organisational learning for organisations in a range of contexts.

3. Design and critically appraise organisational-based knowledge management strategies that facilitate organisational learning, including knowledge management IT systems together with cultural and interpersonal interventions.

4. Demonstrate a holistic understanding of the issues associated with implementing knowledge management strategies and facilitating organisational learning.

5. Explain and critically evaluate ethical professional practices associated with knowledge management and organisational learning.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
