Short Description

This course provides an introduction into the world of the voluntary and community sector (VCS) and aims to equip students with the necessary analytical tools to understand how it functions and how it integrates with the rest of the economy. Extensive use of case study material is used, aiming to develop practical skills useful for the sector.

Entry to an Honours programme in Business and Management or a GPA of 12 in the level 2 courses listed below for students taking an Honours programme in another subject:

Intended Learning Outcomes

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? No

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

Course Aims

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the voluntary and community sector (VCS), from a management perspective, and to equip them with an understanding of the environment, economy and management challenges organisations within the sector operate in. The course aims to offer opportunities to explore the main theories and debates in VCS research, yet it also uses extensive case study material aiming to provide students with practical skills useful for the sector.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

B the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Explain and differentiate between voluntary and community sector (VCS) related concepts'

2. Demonstrate competence in situating their learning within the context of current prominent research debates;

3. Recognise and describe the role of a range of VCS organisations in the economy;

4. Analyse and compare management approaches and challenges in a range of VCS organisations;

5. Demonstrate practical skills that can be useful in the VCS organisational environment.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's

summative assessment.
