Short Description

Stage One aims to provide students with the linguistic skills they will need to allow them to cope confidently, if at a fairly basic level, with most everyday social and "survival" situations in the target language. They will also be given some insight into the culture and way of life of the target country/ies, to enable them to integrate more easily into a foreign environment.

Timetable

4 hours weekly (January - March) with revision sessions in April and May, as scheduled on MyCampus

This course is only available to Glasgow School of Art students.

Assessment

Various Language Exercises - 20%

Oral Assessment (2 x 10 minutes) - 30%

Written Examination (2 hours) - 50%

 

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ An online oral language examination via video link with marker as an alternative to the oral assessment.

■ There is no alternative to the assessed language exercises, but extensions to the deadlines can be offered as a reasonable adjustment (students should follow the usual process for extensions).

■ There is no alternative to the written examination, but extra time and/or a separate room may be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for examination adjustments).

Further reasonable adjustments may be provided where necessary. Students are encouraged to consult with the course convenor.

Main Assessment In: April/May

Course Aims

This course will provide the opportunity to:

■ develop language skills in areas related to students' studies and work;

■ develop awareness of the customs, culture and society of the countries in which the language is spoken;

■ develop transferable skills such as communication skills, confidence, initiative, independent learning, social/cultural sensitivity and time management.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ exchange information on familiar topics, such as personal details, both orally and in writing, as appropriate to some specific socio-cultural contexts;

■ understand short and straightforward reading and listening materials on familiar topics;

■ understand and use basic structures and vocabulary of the target language (approx. 200 - 250 characters)

■ perform tasks described in Level 1 of the HSK system, and some described as Level 2.
