This course, which provides students with the resources needed to attain B1 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL), is targeted at students who have completed French for International Mobility 3 (IM3), or have equivalent knowledge of the language. The course will help students continue their development of the four fundamental skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), while introducing additional grammar points and vocabulary and expanding their awareness of French culture.

2 x 1hr or 1 x 2hr classes per week over 11 weeks as scheduled on MyCampus

D3 or above in LANGCTR1061 or MFL1063 or LANGCTR1062 or MFL1064 or at the discretion of the Programme Director.

Two x assessed language exercise - 10% each

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. Where, exceptionally, reassessment on Honours courses is required to satisfy professional/accreditation requirements, only the overall course grade achieved at the first attempt will contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

Oral assessments are not available for reassessment.

This course aims to:

■ enable students to communicate effectively in spoken and written French at CERFL B1 level on a variety of general topics;

■ enable students to give and understand information and to achieve a confident intermediate level of communicative competence in everyday situations;

■ build on students' existing knowledge of grammatical and syntactical French structures, introducing compound tenses, the conditional, comparatives and superlatives, and simple passive.

■ develop students' knowledge of the customs, culture and society of the regions/countries in which the language is spoken and develop students' awareness of the general social and cultural background of the language;

■ encourage a positive and confident attitude towards language learning and set students on a path of lifelong language learning.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ understand and use more complex grammatical and syntactical structures;

■ speak, understand, read and write French to CERFL Level B1;

■ give information and exchange opinions on a variety of topics, both orally and in writing;

■ identify key aspects of the culture of the regions in which French is spoken

■ apply transferable skills developed throughout the course, such as communication skills, confidence, initiative, group work and independent learning, in a wider context.

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
