Short Description

This course aims to provide students with the opportunity of learning the basic social and "survival" skills in the target language, to give them some insight into cultural differences and to introduce them to some specifically medical terminology.

Timetable

Teaching takes place in a 5 week block, Monday to Friday 9am-12.30pm

Assessment

The standard assessments for this course are: 

■ Various Language Exercises - 30%

■ Oral Assessment (3 x 10 minutes) - 30%

■ Written Examination (2 hours) - 40%

 

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available: 

 

■ There is no alternative to the Assessed Language Exercises but extensions to the deadlines can be offered as reasonable adjustment (students should follow the usual process for extensions).

 

■ Invigilated oral online examination as alternative to oral assessment.

 

■ There is no alternative to the Written Examination, but extra time and/or a separate room may be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for examination adjustments).

 

Further reasonable adjustments may be provided where necessary. Students are encouraged to consult with the course convenor. 

Main Assessment In: April/May

Course Aims

This course will provide the opportunity to:

■ develop language skills in areas related to students' studies and work;

■ develop awareness of the customs, culture and society of the countries in which the language is spoken;

■ develop transferable skills such as communication skills, confidence, initiative, independent learning, social/cultural sensitivity and time management.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ exchange information on familiar topics such as personal details, both orally and in writing, as appropriate to some specific socio-cultural contexts;

■ understand short and straightforward reading and listening materials on familiar topics;

■ understand and use basic grammar structures of the target language, including present and past indicative;

■ perform tasks described in level A1 of the Common European Framework and some described as A2.
