Short Description

This course will cover foundations of quality improvement and service evaluation within the context of health and social care service delivery. The students will engage with principles of quality improvement and service evaluation, have an opportunity to use relevant methods to conduct relevant service-specific activity and develop quality improvement outputs. This course will entail self-directed study, one-to-one academic mentoring, and interaction with health, education, social care service where project is planned to be conducted. The student is expected to take the lead in identifying the service where the project will take place.

Timetable

This is primarily a student led course but all students will have an assigned tutor who they can meet with over the course of 10 weeks and who will provide academic supervision for their quality improvement/service evaluation project. They will also have specified online self-directed material to complete in preparation for their project work.

Requirements of Entry

This course is only open to those registered on the PhD in Clinical Psychology Science.

Assessment

1. Proposal 50% (1500 words) (ILO 1) 

 

2. Presentation 50% - ILOs 1 through 3 

The students will prepare a 20 minute presentation to describe their project and findings. 

Course Aims

This course aims:

1. To enable students to conduct a piece of service evaluation or quality improvement work of relevance to a variety of applied practice settings including health, social care, and tertiary education

2. To allow students the opportunity to develop their evaluation and research dissemination skills with a range of stakeholders

3. To support students in developing leadership competencies within the health, tertiary education, and social care service delivery system by conceptualizing, undertaking, and communicating relevant quality improvement and service evaluation activity.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

1. Conceptualize and design a service-based evaluation or quality improvement work relevant to health or social care practice.

2. Critically analyse quality improvement methods used in healthcare settings

3. Use appropriate evaluation and quality improvement methods and outputs including data analysis and synthesis skills

4. Present and disseminate service evaluation or quality improvement findings to relevant stakeholders
