Short Description

This course will enable students to learn from sector experts about the key concepts of implementing Positive Behaviour Support for people with intellectual disabilities, and how to use these skills in practice.

Students will learn skills in developing and implementing multi-element Positive Behaviour Support plans, with reference to a range of proactive interventions for challenging behaviour, such as alternative and augmentative communication methods and active support.

Course Aims

The aim of this course is to teach students how to design and develop person-centred Positive Behaviour Support plans for individuals with intellectual disabilities and challenging behaviour. This will include all aspects of Positive Behaviour Support, including environmental changes; active support; augmentative communication; and reactive strategies. The course also teaches practical skills in implementing Positive Behaviour Support, using a practice leadership approach.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Design and develop Positive Behaviour Support plans, appropriate to the needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities and challenging behaviour. 

2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of Positive Behaviour Support strategies required to address challenging behaviour in this population. 

3. Develop implementation plans to support the implementation of Positive Behaviour Support in practice, with particular emphasis on using a practice leadership approach. 

4. Critically reflect on approaches to the implementation of Positive Behaviour Support based on the research literature.

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
