Short Description

For the Developing and Evaluating Interventions MSc dissertation, students will identify and collaborate with an organisation that delivers social or health programmes, or work within their own organisation, to pursue their dissertation project. This will be either the development of a new programme, an evaluability assessment of an existing programme, or the evaluation of an existing programme. Where appropriate, a representative of the organisation will act as a field supervisor for the project.

Course Aims

The dissertation aims to synthesise and apply the knowledge acquired from the taught courses, on the development, evaluability assessment or evaluation of programmes. The dissertation also aims to enable students to utilise research skills, develop and lead a project under supervision, liaise with practitioner partners, communicate findings appropriately, and develop writing skills for both academic and non-academic audiences. 

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this dissertation students will be able to:


■ Design, plan and complete a project to develop or evaluate a programme intended to improve society or health, or to conduct an evaluability assessment of such a programme.

■ Critically evaluate, select and know how to implement the most appropriate research methods for either the development of a new programme, or an evaluability assessment, or process and'/or outcome evaluation of an existing programme.

■ Liaise with practitioner partners in developing, evaluating or conducting an evaluability assessment of social or health programmes.

■ Communicate findings to practitioner and academic audiences in the most appropriate ways.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
