Short Description

This course aims to provide students with background knowledge and skills on a number of topics relevant to working in a sports medicine environment. This course includes theoretical background to topics whilst putting them into a real life sporting scenario with lectures from a number of people working in high profile sport.

Assessment

50% Editorial based on BJSM guidelines. A maximum of 1000 words on one of these topics with 1 figure and no more than 8 references (ILO 1,2,3)

Oral Presentation 50% (Presentation and defence of Scientific Paper in front of peers/tutors including wider literature) This maps to the ILO 4 to critically review and discuss the evidence of a specific injury and put this in wider context

Course Aims

The course aims to:

■ Introduce common clinical challenges in Sport and Exercise Medicine

■ Explore the ethical and medico-legal challenges of Sport and Exercise Medicine

■ Develop an understanding of the multi-disciplinary team involved in Sport and Exercise Medicine

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Critically review and discuss the environmental problems inherent to exercise

2. Critically evaluate the role of pre-participation screening of athletes and the role and process of the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) in drug testing of athletes

3. Critically evaluate the role of cardiac screening in the general and sporting population

4. Critically discuss and evaluate how specific patient groups have specific clinical challenges in a sporting environment, for example - the female athlete, those with mental health issues

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
