Short Description

This course provides advanced understanding of the neuropathology, neurological symptoms and neuropsychology of the major degenerative conditions including, Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, fronto-temporal dementia, Lewy body dementia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, HIV/AIDS, motor neurone disease, corticobasal degeneration, delirium and progressive supranuclear palsy. The course also examines the evidence in relation to approaches to cognitive screening and neuropsychological rehabilitation in the context of degenerative conditions.

Five consecutive days as a part of a two-week teaching block in Clinical Neuropsychology in November

A professional qualification in a relevant healthcare profession (e.g. Clinical Psychology, Medicine, Occupational Therapy, Speech & Language Therapy, Physiotherapy).

This course is examined as part of two exam that covers this course as well as Acquired Brain Injury and Clinical Neuropsychology.

Course Aims

To enable participants to develop an advanced understanding of the neuropathology, neurological symptoms and neuropsychology of the major degenerative conditions including, Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, fronto-temporal dementia, Lewy body dementia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, HIV/AIDS, motor neurone disease, corticobasal degeneration, delirium and progressive supranuclear palsy.

 

The develop knowledge of the evidence in relation to approaches to cognitive screening and neuropsychological rehabilitation in the context of degenerative conditions.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

To be able to describe the neuropathology, neurological symptoms and neuropsychological presentation of the following conditions: Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, fronto-temporal dementia, Lewy body dementia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, HIV/AIDS, motor neurone disease, corticobasal degeneration, delirium and progressive supranuclear palsy.

 

To be able to describe, and critically appraise, the evidence in relation to approaches to cognitive screening and neuropsychological rehabilitation in the context of degenerative conditions.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must pass the examination.
