Short Description

A student selected component undertaken by all students in MBChB4. Students propose their own project or select from a menu of choices, and are required to complete a summative assessment which is specific to their chosen project.

Assessment

Assessment styles may differ for each SSC, however every SSC requires a minimum 60% written assessment.

■ To learn about and begin to develop and use research skills.

■ To have greater control over their own learning and develop their self-directed learning skills.

■ To study, in depth, topics of particular interest outside the core curriculum.

■ To develop greater confidence in their own skills and abilities.

■ To consider potential career paths.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Describe the principles and ethical considerations for clinical research and practice

■ Explain the role of evidence-based research in clinical practice and decision making

■ Explore relevant research questions for an area of clinical research, and undertake self-directed evidence-based learning to address the questions

■ Exhibit professional and ethical attitudes and behaviours to ensure patient safety while working in a multidisciplinary environment
