Course Aims

To prepare students for research-based activity involving mathematics to develop independent learning ability, verbal presentation and communication skills.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ integrate knowledge gained from the lecture courses and skills gained from the lecture programmes in the MSc in order to carry out an extended piece of research;

■ demonstrate a sound understanding of the major issues in the area in which the project is posed;

■ demonstrate the ability to plan an extended piece of mathematical research and to carry it out;

■ demonstrate a critical appreciation of the issues involved in addressing the research questions;

■ present and interpret the results, including critical review and discussion thereof in a well-structured thesis;

■ present the results of the investigation orally to an audience.
