Short Description

Stage Three is designed to encourage participants to consolidate and enhance already-existing social skills in the target language, to become more confident in using the language in a professional context and to deepen their understanding of the way of life in the target country and the cultural environment in which they will be working / studying.

This course is only available to GSA Product Design students

Assessment

40% Oral Assessment - 30 % continuous assessment, 10% for general participation in class throughout the year and 20% assessing the student's ability to cope with a series of oral tasks throughout the year. At the end of the year students will also be required to prepare and deliver in the target language an oral presentation on a design-related topic of their choice. This presentation will be worth 10% of the total mark.
60% Final Examination - Listening 25%, Reading 25%, Writing 10%

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of the course students will be able to
· cope comfortably with conversations on a fairly wide range of general issues including current affairs
· sustain a discussion by expressing ideas, offering opinions and voicing agreement / polite disagreement with other points of view
· make a short oral presentation on a design-related topic and clarify and expand on opinions expressed in this presentation
· understand the gist of what they hear in conversation, on television and on the radio provided the material is fairly accessible and the speaker is articulating clearly at a reasonable speed ; ask for clarification where necessary
· read and understand, newspapers and extracts from contemporary texts in the target language
· read and understand, journals and other material on the subject of product design
· write, with the help of a dictionary, formal and informal letters in the target language, demonstrating an ability to convey key information and to develop arguments and points of view
· write, with the help of a dictionary, short texts on the subject of product design

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
