The first part of this course concentrates on the history of women in the years 1900-1945, and pays particular attention to the women's movements of the turn of the century, the relationship between women and fascism and the role of Italian women in the Resistance to fascism. The second part of the course looks at women in the latter half of the century and also considers the question of women and literature and issues that have arisen out the development of feminist literary theory.

Semester 1: 1500 word essay (35%)

Semester 2: 2500 word essay (65%)

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

This course will provide the opportunity to:

■ examine the role of women in 20th century Italy; 

■ look at historical and cultural developments and will consider their significance for Italian women; 

■ pay particular attention to the question of women and literature, and will discuss issues that have arisen out the development of feminist literary theory.

By the end of the course students will be able to:

■ Demonstrate a knowledge of the history of women and of the women's movement in 20th Century Italy;

■ Show a critical understanding of the main issues involved in feminist historiography and feminist literary criticism;

■ Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the set texts and their historical contexts;

■ Trace and compare the treatment of recurring themes in the set texts

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
