Short Description
Multimedia shapes how we create, share, and interpret information across digital platforms. From websites to interactive exhibits, it offers new possibilities for storytelling, engagement, and accessibility. This course explores the principles and practices behind designing, structuring, and evaluating multimedia resources in a humanities context. Students will examine how visual, textual, and interactive elements work together to communicate ideas effectively, and will gain hands-on experience in creating multimedia projects that respond to different audiences and research goals

Course Aims
This course aims to:
■ Examine and apply theoretical design principles for creating and evaluating multimedia work, with engagement with current debates and forefront developments in design theory, through the development of a digital artefact.
■ Develop and critique advanced visual and aural based skills and critical perceptions to understand, appraise and theorise multimedia developments and relate that to their own project portfolio.
■ Create a functional multimedia digital artefact.
■ Evidence sophisticated analytical and practical skills to design, construct and critically evaluate multimedia presentations with originality and theoretical grounding.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
1. Critically apply and theoretically evaluate the quality of multimedia projects using sophisticated methods grounded in advanced design theory, demonstrating critical understanding of principles at or informed by forefront developments
2. Develop a multimedia computing project in a visually and aurally sophisticated manner, demonstrating critical literacy and theoretical awareness of multimodal communication
3. Define, prototype and implement and then critique multimedia projects, with originality in approach and critical reflection on design decisions.
4. Demonstrate advanced competence in using a significant range of multimedia technologies, applying specialised techniques informed by current developments and showing creativity in implementation
5. Critically evaluate and discuss the relationship between design choices, user experience, and meaning-making in multimedia contexts, demonstrating critical awareness of current issues in digital communication and engagement with relevant scholarship
