Short Description

This course offers students a professional insight into how a university museum service operates through the process of exhibition planning and development from the initial concept stage through to final installation through a series of talks and practical exercises led by museum staff.

Portfolio (60%, 2000 words) Reflective learning record supported by examples of work undertaken during the course

Group Project (40% 1500-2000 words) Students will work in groups to produce an exhibition proposal. Individual contributions to group tasks will be documented through online activities and separate marks may be awarded in the case of exceptional performance.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ Provide professional insight into how a UK university museum service operates and offer opportunities to gain practical experience in implementing museum policy, meeting strategic objectives and delivering services;

■ Consolidate and develop students' knowledge and understanding of museum theory and practice with a special focus on project creation, planning and delivery;

■ Provide students with the opportunity to understand and respect the differences in approaches between cultural heritage institutions;

■ Offer students opportunities to refine and develop their learning interests and to explore potential future career paths.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Identify the operational processes, policies and strategies of a university museum and evaluate how these differ from other types of cultural heritage institutions;

■ Identify the different stages of exhibition planning and the professional roles and skills involved including collections care, research, education, audience development, marketing, and merchandise.

■ Evaluate the differences in departmental priorities and propose solutions for addressing tensions within the exhibition development process

■ Create an exhibition proposal that meets professional standards;

■ Collaborate with others and communicate effectively within a professional context;

■ Reflect upon and critically evaluate their learning.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
