Short Description

This course complements the theory and practice of Principles and Practice: Advanced Skills, putting the practical skills into context and including case studies of conservation treatments, demonstrating how interventive skills are selected and used for a range of clients including different types of museums. It introduces the specialist skills used on a range of textiles, including costume, world cultures objects and upholstery.

Assessment

Literature review on a selected conservation issue for conservation journal 80%. The 4,000 word review will be prepared following the guidelines of a professional conservation publication. It is hoped that some of the reviews will be of publishable quality.

Annotated bibliography 20% (1,000 words), on the topic of the literature review but focusing on individual publications rather than the overall subject. This will be circulated so that all students can benefit from the in-depth research carried out.

■ Expose you to the specialist expertise of conservation professionals

■ Enhance understanding of the way practical treatments are applied in different contexts

■ Encourage a greater appreciation of the value of critical engagement with literature as a means of gaining specialist knowledge and expertise

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Identify issues involved in the conservation treatment of a specialist group of textiles

■ Analyse and critically evaluate a body of literature relating to a specialist skill, conservation technique or material

■ Select information to disseminate to your peer group

■ Use oral, written and visual communication skills, including:

■ Selecting and presenting information in a clear and coherent manner

Using an appropriate style for inclusion in a professional journal

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
