To introduce students to the 19th century world inhabited by women artists,
focusing on Britain and France and to establish key themes and debates that determined their practice and relationship with their audiences/readerships.
One lecture and one seminar per week, with an oral presentation and follow-up discussion in the seminar.
Requirements of Entry
Entry into Honours will be subject to normal departmental requirements.
One 2 hour written exam (60%), one 2000 word essay (30%) and an oral presentation or equivalent exercise (10%)

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? Not applicable
Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below.

- To encourage learning through seminar participation, seminar presentations and guided independent study.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of the course, students should be able to demonstrate their acquisition of knowledge and skills by:
- demonstrating through the essay, oral presentation and examination a clear understanding of visual and cultural framework inhabited by women artists in Britain and France.
- commenting critically and comparatively about the relationships between individual artists and their publics (critics, patrons and non-specialist).
- displaying in their written and oral work a critical appreciation of the key critical approaches and problems in the production and reception of works by women artists.
- engaging with and critically evaluating a number of key critical texts and visual resources, and demonstrating familiarity at a basic level with research resources relating to the topic.
- developing enhanced organisational and public speaking skills through seminar participation and oral presentations;
- using critical, visual and research skills to present a coherent and considered argument in seminar participation and oral presentations.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
