Short Description

This course provides training in developing a research project and outputs for public and internal audiences with a non-profit partner institution. You will explore different ways to engage a public or policy audience with historical research, while developing practical skills and experience in collaboration with professional practitioners.

Timetable

2x 2 hour taught sessions, 1 per semester, as scheduled on MyCampus.

6 x 1 hour supervision meetings, 3 per semester.

140 hours of project work across semester 1 and 2, by arrangement with the partner institution.

 

This is one of the MSc optional courses available to students enrolled on a Reparatory Justice Programme, and may not run every year. The options that are running this session are available on MyCampus.

Assessment

Research journal 3,000 words -- 60%

Blog post for a public audience 1,500 words -- 40%

Course Aims

This course aims to:

* Provide high quality research experience in collaboration with a heritage or social justice related organisation.

* Provide an opportunity to put into practice some of the knowledge and skills gained during the programme.

* Promote the acquisition of specialist skills in public history and transferable skills in time management, independent learning, problem solving and project evaluation.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

* Evaluate aims, strategies and professional practices of a partner institution in relation to a research project;

* Apply relevant academic knowledge to the practical aspects of the project and effectively present findings and recommendations;

* Critically reflect on their role, contribution and acquired knowledge and skills and their application to future employment.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
