This course will view the First War of independence as a crucible in which individuals were faced with momentous decisions concerning loyalty and allegiance, and in which existing mechanisms for expressing Scottish identity were tested and changed.

15x1hr lectures, 5x1hr seminars over 10 weeks as scheduled in MyCampus. This is one of the Honours options in History and may not run every year. The options that are running this session are available on MyCampus

Available to all students fulfilling requirements for Honours entry into History, and by arrangement to visiting students or students of other Honours programmes

The standard assessments for this course are:

■ Exam (24-hour online): 60%.

■ Essay (2,000 words): 20%

■ Seminar presentation (5 mins): 10%

■ Seminar oral contribution: 10%

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ There is no alternative to the exam or essays, but flexible deadlines/extra time/alternative space can be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for extensions)

■ 1:1 presentation / Q&A with course convenor or recorded presentation as alternative to seminar presentation.

■ Written response to seminar material in advance or after seminar as alternative to contribution.

Further reasonable adjustments may be provided where necessary. Students are encouraged to consult with the course convenor.

This aims to:

■ Develop an understanding of the First Scottish War of Independence, 1286-1329

■ Improve critical and analytical skills, through the study of primary and secondary texts embodying different perspectives.

■ Enhance creativity in developing personal interpretations.

■ Synthesise these elements - knowledge, skills and creativity - in writing, oral presentation and seminar discussion.

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

■ Express a critical understanding of key primary sources and the major historiographical frameworks and debates which inform our current understanding of the First Scottish War of Independence, 1286-1329.

■ Assess the individuals, events, issues and ideologies which shaped the First Scottish War of Independence, 1286-1329, including their relative significance, and their interaction

■ Make arguments in clear and concise prose and verbal expression.
