This course will develop students' skills in oral language transference, in accurate spoken translation and in the preparation of materials for consecutive interpreting. This can provide a basis from which to go on, into specialist training as interpreter.

20 x 1-hour seminars over both semesters as scheduled on MyCampus

Available to all students fulfilling the requirements for Honours entry into Spanish or Hispanic Studies, and by arrangement to visiting students or students of other Honours programmes.

The standard assessments for this course are:

■ Two skills assignments (250-300 words each) - 20% (10% each)

■ Forum contribution (250-300 words) - 10%

■ Unseen Interpreting Task (20 mins) - 70%

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ There is no alternative to the skills assignments and forum contributions, but extra time can be offered as reasonable adjustment (students should follow the usual process for examination adjustments).

■ An invigilated online oral examination as an alternative to the unseen interpreting task.

Further reasonable adjustments may be provided where necessary. Students are encouraged to consult with the course convenor.

This course will provide the opportunity to:

■ develop skills in oral language transference, in accurate spoken translation and in the preparation of materials for consecutive interpreting;

■ continue into specialist training as interpreter.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ interpret messages between speakers of Spanish and English with a high level of linguistic accuracy, cultural correspondence and appropriateness of register;

■ prepare specialist linguistic material in both languages under pressured conditions.
