This course focuses exclusively on refining and perfecting speaking skills in the target language. Classes will offer a wide range of spoken language exercises such as presentation, open discussion, dialogue and debate. This course forms year 2 of a 2-year programme.

One hour weekly throughout both semesters as scheduled on MyCampus.

Teaching will take place in weeks 1-5 and 7-11. Week 6 will be dedicated to guided independent study. 

Available to all students fulfilling requirements for Honours entry into German, and by arrangement to visiting students or students of other Honours programmes who qualify under the University's 25% regulation.

Successful completion of German Honours Spoken Language (Junior).

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

This course aims to:

■ encourage students to speak with confidence and to reach levels of fluency commensurate with level C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

■ stimulate intellectually sophisticated debate and critically informed discussion around aspects of the target language and culture by means of conversation.

■ develop students' oral communicative skills with reference to a variety of intellectual and cultural topics connected with their academic programme.

■ enable students to work effectively and grow in their ability to take responsibility for their acquisition of vocabulary, appropriate lexical structures, and competent syntax.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ speak with ease in the target language using a wide range of grammatical structures, register, and vocabulary with a high level of accuracy.

■ discuss a variety of intellectual and cultural topics connected with their academic programme in an articulate fashion, demonstrating critical reflection and independence of thought.

■ draw on intercultural skills when speaking in the target language.

■ interact freely with native speakers of the target language in a range of situations, including formal and professional as well as more informal settings.

■ deliver a formal presentation in the target language, with a high level of fluency and linguistic accuracy, employing sophisticated presentation skills.

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
