Short Description

Emphasising those aspects of the language which differ most significantly from Scottish Gaelic, this is a basic introductory course for students with a prior knowledge of Scottish Gaelic. The course describes the main differences of spelling, pronunciation, grammar and lexicon between the two languages, and provides students with a basic reading knowledge of Modern Irish.

Timetable

Two one-hour sessions per week as scheduled on My Campus. This is one of the Honours options in Gaelic and may not run every year. The options that are running this session are available on MyCampus.

Requirements of Entry

Available to all students fulfilling requirements for Honours entry into Celtic Studies or Gaelic, and by arrangement to visiting students or students of other Honours programmes. Students require prior knowledge of Scottish Gaelic (if unsure of level, contact course convener).

Assessment

The standard assessments for this course are:

■ Ten exercises (including grammar and translation work), one per week with only 5 summative. - 60%

■ Examination (90 minutes duration) - 40%

 

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ There is no alternative to the written assessments, but flexible deadlines and extra time can be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for extensions).

Course Aims

This course will provide the opportunity to:

■ provide students with a linguistic description of Modern Irish

■ to emphasise and discuss some of the main differences between Modern Irish and Scottish Gaelic

■ provide students with a basic reading knowledge of Modern Irish

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of the course, students will be able:

■ give an account of the linguistic structure of Modern Irish

■ describe some of the major linguistic differences between Modern Irish and Scottish Gaelic

■ translate an unseen passage from Irish to English

■ construct basic sentences in Modern Irish.
