This course further develops skills of students in speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension of Scottish Gaelic. It is suitable for students who have completed Gaelic 1 (Beginners) or Beginners Gaelic for Honours Students,; or who have a pass in Higher Gaelic. Students will be introduced to a range of modern poetry and prose in Gaelic; and will be encouraged to develop the appropriate analytical, study and essay-writing skills to take them further with the language.

Lectures on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday/Friday, at 1pm over 20 weeks as scheduled on MyCampus; weekly practical class over 19 weeks; time to be arranged.

Available to all students fulfilling requirements for Honours entry in Celtic Studies, and by arrangement to visiting students or students of other Honours programmes, together with a Grade D3 or above in Gaelic 1B or Beginners Gaelic for Honours Students; or pass in Higher Gaelic.

The standard assessments for this course are:

■ Gaelic essay (1000 words) - 25%  

■ 10 Language exercises, of which 5 formative (1000 words) - 25%

■ Oral exam (10 mins) - 20%

■ Exam (90 mins words) - 30% 

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ An online video presentation with marker as an alternative to the oral exam.

■ There is no alternative to the written assessments, but flexible deadlines or extra time can be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for extensions).

Further reasonable adjustments may be provided where necessary. Students are encouraged to consult with the course convenor.

This course will provide the opportunity to:

■ build on and develop Gaelic language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking);

■ introduce students to a wide range of poetry from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries;

■ read and discuss a range of Gaelic texts (fiction, non-fiction and poetry) from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries

■ adopt an integrated approach to language practice and oral classes which will reinforce vocabulary and grammar;

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ converse and write accurately in Gaelic on a range of topics such as education, health and the media

■ translate a range of texts from English to Gaelic with a high degree of accuracy

■ translate and discuss a range of seen Gaelic texts (fiction, non-fiction and poetry);

■ translate an unseen Gaelic passage of average difficulty
