This is a course for beginners in Gaelic, enabling students to acquire basic language skills in speaking, reading, writing and listening. Students will be introduced to the grammatical framework of the language and will develop appropriate vocabulary through the study of some Gaelic prose texts; an overview of the historical and sociolinguistic context of Gaelic and of the history of Gaelic literature.

Lectures on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday at 2pm as scheduled on MyCampus; weekly practical class over 21 weeks; time to be arranged.

The standard assessments for this course are:

■ Written language exercises completed throughout the year (25%)

■ A class test at the end of Week 11 (15%).

■ Oral examination at the end of semester 1 (10%).

■ A 2-hour written examination at the end of the course in April/May (30%)

■ Oral examination at the end of the course in April/May (20%)

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ There is no alternative to the written assessments, but flexible deadlines can be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for extensions).

■ There is no alternative to the class test, but extra time/alternative space can be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for extensions).

■ An online oral language examination via video link with marker as an alternative to the oral exams.

■ There is no alternative to the exam, but extra time/alternative space can be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for extensions).

Further reasonable adjustments may be provided where necessary. Students are encouraged to consult with the course convenor.

This course will provide the opportunity to:

■ enable students to acquire basic language skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing) in Gaelic;

■ introduce students to a range of appropriate vocabulary and to the grammatical framework of the language;

■ study some Gaelic prose texts;

■ give students an overview of the historical and sociolinguistic context of Gaelic and of the history of Gaelic literature.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ participate confidently in a conversation in Gaelic on a range of subjects, such as personal details, home and family and holidays;

■ use a range of course grammar and vocabulary accurately in spoken and written form; 

■ demonstrate a good level of comprehension of written Gaelic texts

■ outline some of the key developments in Gaelic literature and history.
