Short Description

The aim of this course is to introduce students to a range of methodologies for the analysis of structure, operation and output of media, creative industries and cultural policy. It will also help prepare them to undertake a Masters level dissertation.

Assessment

There are three forms of assessment divided across the two semesters.

 

Semester 1:

Report (1500 words): 30%

Research diary (a series of visual and written entries equivalent to 1000 words): 20%

 

Semester 2:

Research Proposal (2500 words): 50%

Course Aims

The course aims to:

■ enable students to develop and design a viable and appropriate research proposal;

■ develop students' knowledge and understanding of the tools and techniques utilised in carrying out research on topics in creative and media industries and cultural policy;

■ prepare students for research focused on themes and topics relevant to these subject areas.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of the course students will be able to:

■ define a research question, problem or topic relevant to the fields of creative and media industries and cultural policy;

■ conduct effective background research and undertake a literature review;

■ identify appropriate sources, research methods and techniques for the investigation of the chosen topic;

■ prepare and present a developed proposal for an original research project relevant to the fields of creative and media industries and cultural policy.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
