Short Description

This course explores screen representations of violence from a feminist perspective. Students will analyse the aesthetic conventions developed in the presentation of screen violence and explore contemporary debates about its social implications.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ Explore the relationship between gender and violence in contemporary screen representations from a position informed by feminist research and activism on the gendered expression of violence.

■ Develop an understanding of the distinctive aesthetic and generic codes of screen violence through the close study of a range of screen texts.

■ Engage with ongoing public and theoretical debates about the social implications of screen violence.

■ Consider the respective insights and limitations of different conceptual frameworks (e.g. effects theory, audience studies genre studies, realism) for a study of screen violence.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Demonstrate an understanding of feminist theories of gendered violence and representations.

■ Critically evaluate claims concerning the 'effects' of screen violence.

■ Critically evaluate the respective insights and limitations of different conceptual frameworks for a study of screen violence.

■ Develop and apply this knowledge across the formal assessments.
