Short Description
Course exploring a range of films (popular genre movies and art cinema) from post-war Japan in relation to their historical background (national and international). Examines in particular the international circulation and understanding of Japanese cinema.

Requirements of Entry
Available to all students fulfilling requirements for Honours entry into Film and Television studies, and by arrangement to visiting students or students of other Honours programmes.

Assessment
The standard assessments for this course are:
■ Essay 1 (1800 words) - 40%
■ Essay 2 (2200 words) / Curatorial Programme Pitch (2200 words) / Video Essay (6 minutes) - 60%

Course Aims
This course aims to:
■ introduce students to a range of popular and art films from post-war Japan
■ provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to analyse post-war Japanese films in relation to their historical context
■ develop the skills of critical reflection necessary to understand how the global comprehension of Japan can be shaped by international reception of Japanese cinema.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ Demonstrate an understanding of the diversity of post-war Japanese cinema
■ Utilise the skills required to analyse post-war Japanese films in relationship to the historical context from which they emerged
■ Apply the ability to critically reflect on how the global comprehension of Japan can be shaped by international reception of Japanese cinema.
