Short Description

Part of a suite of three courses aimed at students taking the non-Honours MA in Social Sciences. Students will join an existing honours course in Economic and Social history where they will develop skills in historiography, critical analysis, and understanding debates on a theme related to economic and social history, 1775-2000.

1 hour weekly lectures x 10 weeks. 1 hour weekly seminars x 10 weeks.

Assessment

One primary source report (1500 words, 35%)

One written essay (3000 words, 65%)

Course Aims

To provide intensive training through lectures and seminars on a general topic in Economic and Social History related to the project group in Research Methods in Economic and Social History A and B.

To develop transferable and other skills associated with the University's Employability strategy.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

Upon completion of this course students will be able to:

ILO 1. Analyse historical texts, both primary and secondary

ILO 2. Demonstrate awareness of continuity and change during a specified historical period

ILO 3. Identify and analyse historical debates about a set topic

ILO 4. Apply knowledge gained from the above within assessments to enable a reflective approach acting on feedback received

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
