Short Description

This Semester Two option in the M Ed TESOL provides an overview of principles in TESOL course design. Participants extend knowledge of language and language learning by relating these to the design and implementation of courses. Students consider the principles of course design, from needs analysis to assessment and including materials evaluation and how these are put into practice in the classroom.

Assessment

The assignment is a portfolio of 4,000 words, consisting of two parts

 

Part 1) Course Materials based case-study and discussion of principles of course design. 1,500 words (35%)

 

Part 2) Course design project: design of a short course, including 2 exemplar outline lessons, for a specific group in a specific context. 2,500 words; (65% )

Course Aims

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to enable them to evaluate materials and design short TESOL courses for specific contexts.

 

Specifically it aims to:

 

■ introduce the principles of course design

■ link descriptions of language and language learning theories to materials section, sequencing and course design

■ enable students to analyse and evaluate classroom applications of course design

■ enable students to design a short course with exemplar outline lessons

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of the course the students will be able to:

 

■ Explain course design principles for specific contexts and in relation to language learning theories

■ Evaluate teaching materials for specific teaching contexts

■ Evaluate and apply needs analysis instruments for course design purposes

■ Select and sequence materials and lessons in course design

■ Design outline exemplar lesson plans for a specific teaching context and course
