The course aims to develop students' capacity to critically engage with theoretical and empirical literature in specialist areas in order to obtain an overview of current thinking and recent developments in a chosen field.
Blended learning: 5 three hour sessions (Saturdays and twilights) plus 4 hours online learning and a 3 hour Tutorial
Requirements of Entry
Suitable Undergraduate Study
1. 4000 word critical essay on a topic within their specialist area (agreed with tutor) encompassing a literature review of the field and culminating in the identification of a future research area. 75% (LO 1-3)
Main Assessment In: April/May
This course will provide students with opportunities to:
Examine in depth specialist areas such as English as an Additional Language, Scottish language and literature, Picturebooks/graphic novels and Literacy across learning.
Complete a systematic review of the literature in a specialist area.
Develop the capacity to critically engage with and use theoretical and empirical literature in order to obtain an overview of a specialist area.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
LO1 Apply specialist knowledge to analyse the specific areas of specialization and identify and justify issues for further investigation.
LO2 Apply skills of critical enquiry in a literature review of the general area of specialization.
LO3 Demonstrate an understanding of the social relevance and potential impact of the identified issues within the area of specialisation in a way that informs both their immediate context and the wider community of practice and provides potential for further research.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components of the course's summative assessment. They must achieve 75% attendance and participate in required online sessions.
