Course Aims

The course aims to:

■ To help develop the ability to access and critically review relevant literature (information literacy)

■ To help develop the use of research evidence in making educational decisions

■ To introduce some basic research skills - qualitative and quantitative methods of enquiry, including an introduction to data analysis.

■ To increase awareness of ethical issues in conducting practitioner research

Wednesday 9-4 three times per semester

Requirements of Entry

This course is offered as part of formal programmes, including the Post Graduate Certificate in Leadership of Drug and Alcohol Services and the Master of Science (Organisational Leadership) and is not available to visitors.

Co-requisites

This course is taken in conjunction with Leading People and Leading Organisations

Assessment

1. Analyse and critique recently published research - a (peer reviewed) journal article or a (commissioned) research report (2000 words)

 

2. Develop a proposal for a small-scale enquiry (2,000 words)

■ background to the project and a brief indication of relevant literature

■ specific aims and objectives of the proposed enquiry

■ proposed methodology and data sources (data collection plan linked to questions)

■ a realistic timeline (over one academic session/12 months)

■ consideration of ethical issues

■ identification of any limitations of the proposal
