Assessment

The assignment is in two parts, where students will reflect on their placement and determine their learning and development from undertaking the shadowing of an experienced leader in a childhood practice setting (different to their own over equivalent to 5 working days).

 

1. Students will give a presentation examining the values and vision evident in the setting. They will reflect on the leadership qualities evident in the placement and use a wide range of research and academic sources to determine a how a positive learning environment can be created for both staff and children (12 - 15 minutes, 2500 word equivalent) 40% 

 

2. Students will examine and critique the contested nature of leadership drawing on a wide range of sources to reflect on the concepts of change and improvement. They will use this examination to inform and develop their discussion, along with their practice placement experience, to articulate the values and vision they wish to create as a leader in their own setting. Students will use the Standard for Childhood Practice (SSSC, 2016) and the Codes of Practice (SSSC, 2016) to indicate key aspects for their own development of leadership skills in their setting and plan for this leadership development identifying 3 aspects indicating how they intend to develop these areas. (3500 words +/- 10%) 60%

■ To explore the role of a leader in childhood practice.

■ To analyse and evaluate their own values and vision for their leadership within Childhood Practice.

■ To develop and critically appraise leadership skills in a change-orientated approach to leadership.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students should be able to:

 

■ Discuss and critique the contested nature of the concept of leadership in Childhood Practice.

■ Critically review the purpose of critical reflection in leadership.

■ Analyse and evaluate their own learning from undertaking the shadowing of an experienced leader in a childhood practice setting different from their own.

■ Consider and reflect on their own leadership after undertaking the shadowing of an experienced leader in a Childhood Practice setting.

■ Reflect on concepts of change and improvement to inform and develop leadership in Childhood Practice.

■ Draw on a wide range of sources to identify their own values and vision which can be adopted to develop their own leadership style.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

To meet requirements of the Scottish Social Services Council, students are required to submit all elements of an assignment and attendance at 75% of classes is required (3 out of 4 contact days).
