Short Description

This course will explore barriers to wellbeing and impact in community development as faced by practitioners and community groups working for social change. It will examine individual and collective methods for cultivating long-term commitment and capacity to address complex community challenges. The course will consider the role of practitioner wellbeing as a core element of social justice practice.

Assessment

1 - A presentation that explores a movement, group, or tradition in the work for social change from the perspective of long-term wellbeing and sustained impact.

2 - A reflective essay in which students consider barriers to wellbeing and impact in their community development practice and design personal and collective strategies for cultivating sustainable engagement in work for social change. (1500 words) 

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? Not applicable for Honours courses

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. Where, exceptionally, reassessment on Honours courses is required to satisfy professional/accreditation requirements, only the overall course grade achieved at the first attempt will contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

Course Aims

The aim of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to incorporate analysis, habits, and skills that support long-term practitioner and group wellbeing in order to achieve sustainable impact in community development for social change.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

LO1: Examine barriers to longevity, wellbeing, and impact in community development practice. 

LO2: Assess conditions for sustained practice within community development work for social change. 

LO3: Design integrated applications of sustainable practice in community-based programming. 

LO4: Construct a plan for personal and collective strategies for sustainable CD practice in their context.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
