Short Description

The aim of this course is to develop and extend students' design knowledge, understanding and skills gained through study during Design 1 and Design 2. The course supports students to develop systematic knowledge and critical understanding of relevant design theories, principles and concepts to inform the intellectual foundation of their design thinking.

Timetable

11 weeks @ 3 hours per week (1 hour lecture; 2 design hour design workshop).

Assessment

Assessment

Students will produce a number of designs in response to a range of problem briefs. Students will be required to integrate a range of knowledge drawn from engineering, science and technology in developing solutions, models and prototypes. They will produce an individual portfolio (60%) and a group project portfolio (40%).

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? No

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below.

Course Aims

The aim of this course is to develop students' knowledge, understanding and skills in the practice of design. In addition students will be required to draw upon and integrate technological knowledge, skills and processes in the generation of solutions to contextualised problems.

This course enables students to have the knowledge to meet the GTCS Standard for Provisional Registration as follows:

2.1.1 Have knowledge and understanding of the nature of the curriculum and its development

2.1.2 Have knowledge and understanding of the relevant area(s) of pre-school, primary or secondary curriculum

3.1.1 Plan coherent, progressive and stimulating teaching programmes which match learners' needs and abilities

3.1.2 Communicate effectively and interact productively with learners, individually and collectively

The course will also develop the following graduate attributes: Subject Specialists; Investigative; Independent and Critical Thinkers; Resourceful and Responsible; Effective Communicators; Confident; Adaptable.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Demonstrate systematic knowledge and critical understanding of relevant design theories, principles and concepts to inform the intellectual foundation of their design thinking.

■ Communicate their design thinking and reasoning using developed specialist design vocabulary in relation local and global societal contexts.

■ Utilise critical analytic thinking to respond to, and appropriately challenge, aspects of the design brief, providing evidence-based justification as part of that response.

■ Generate creative design concepts underpinned by the systematic gathering, analysis and interpretation relevant research and investigation.

■ Demonstrate understanding of advanced design factors that influence design showing of their relevance in different design contexts.

■ Demonstrate considered judgement in deploying a range of modelling techniques to test and realise, ideas, concepts or solutions in 3D form.

■ Utilise the design folio to systematically address iterative design thinking, reasoning and decision-making.

■ Critically evaluate design concepts, products and systems utilising specific metrics and parameters in relation to economic, ecological, safety and social implications.

■ Demonstrate considered deployment of appropriate graphic techniques to communicate aspects of design thinking effectively to intended audience(s).

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment. 80% attendance rule applies. Students must achieve a minimum of D3.
