Philosophy of and for Education 2 builds on Philosophy of and for Education 1. It further explores the history and limitations of Western philosophy and relates them to pedagogy and education.

Assessment

Part 1: 70% Written Assignment (including essay) on key philosopher(s) and an informed perspective on an aspect of the course (1400 words).

 

Part 2: (30%) MCQ that assesses knowledge and understanding of key philosophers, significant ideas and philosophical problems relevant to the course. Designed to assess breadth of knowledge and understanding of core concepts (600 words equivalent).

Course Aims

a) To offer participants a deeper awareness of the history and limitations of Western philosophy as this applies to pedagogy and practice.

b) To encourage a critical awareness of education from a philosophically informed perspective.

c) To allow participants to further develop their knowledge and understanding of Western philosophy in connection to education and pedagogical practice.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

a) Connect key philosophers to representative limitations in the history of Western philosophy.

b) Relate key thinkers and problems of philosophy to pedagogical approaches.

c) Connect key philosophers of education to pedagogical approaches in philosophy.

d) Outline diverse philosophies of education and relate them to pedagogy.
