Short Description

Rooted within the context of Learning for Sustainability, this course examines the local educational and community contexts within which children learn. By deepening explorations of relational, environmental and socio-cultural situations of learning, students will strengthen their critical understanding of sociological and developmental theories of education, inclusive and place-responsive pedagogies, and conceptions of participatory and lived citizenship.

Assessment

Assessment 1 (50%): Students will analyse the educational context of an imagined school (1000 words).

Assessment 2 (50%): Personal, critical reflection (1000 words).

Course Aims

This course aims to:

Support students to build their knowledge of the local relational, environmental, and socio-cultural contexts of learners.

Support students to develop and sustain curious, culturally and place-responsive dispositions as educators.

Support students in building the skills of enquiry, listening, and reflection in understanding the local learning contexts of learners.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. To demonstrate developing knowledge of the local relational, environmental, and socio-cultural contexts of learners.

2. To identify and describe curious, culturally-responsive, and place-responsive dispositions in educators.

3. To demonstrate development of the skills of enquiry, listening, collaboration and reflection in understanding the local context of learners
