Short Description

This course seeks to develop and broaden knowledge, understanding and confidence in the application of approaches to learning and teaching appropriate for the technical curriculum of Scottish schools. The course aims to support students in developing their practice and in making connections between curriculum content, effective teaching and related aspects of practice.

Assessment

Assessment for grading will be made on the basis of the students contribution to a collaborative project with a focus on pupil learning materials in conjunction with a written paper (of approximately 1500 words) set by the course tutor in relation to the learning outcomes set above. A pass grade is required in both elements, before aggregation to give an overall grade.

Course Aims

This course seeks to develop and broaden knowledge, understanding and confidence in the application of approaches to learning and teaching appropriate for the technical curriculum of Scottish schools. The course aims to support students in developing their practice and in making connections between curriculum content, effective teaching and related aspects of practice.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

At the end of this course students should:

1. Have considered effective teaching strategies appropriate for classes, groups and individuals.
2. Have further develop their understand of lesson planning and preparation and the function of planning.
3. Have been introduced to the literature on learning and teaching classes, groups and individuals.
4. Have studied the elements and factors that contribute to effective group and individual learning.
5. Have considered approaches to teaching and learning within the context of the middle school curriculum.
6. Have reflected on and considered approaches to structuring lessons and supporting learning in Craft and Design, Graphic Communication and Technological Studies.
7. Have become aware of the benchmark quality standards for initial teacher education related to the course content.
8. Have been encouraged in developing an attitude of reflection and self-evaluation in relation to their practice.
9. Have been give opportunities to consider Health and Safety in relation to the middle school curriculum
10. Have developed an awareness of ICT and its effective application in supporting learning and teaching
11. Have had an opportunity to engage with the issues involved in producing effective learning resources for use by pupils.
12. Had an opportunity to produce learning materials to support pupil learning
