Short Description

This course aims to support the development of essential knowledge, understanding and skills within the area of Graphics, necessary for teachers of technical subjects.


Weekly 2 hour sessions.

Students will complete a structure programme of assessed graphics tasks and a more extend project.

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? No

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

Course Aims

This course aims to address the development of essential knowledge, understanding and skills within the area of Graphics, necessary for technology teachers, in relation to the computer based programmes and techniques required by the secondary technology curriculum. The course also seeks to provide technology students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to support their design and engineering education in relation to computer based programmes and techniques.


This course supports the achievement of Standard for Initial Teacher Education elements: 1.1, 1.1.2

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of the course the students will be able to:

Demonstrate a comprehensive range of graphics skills, knowledge and understanding in relation to computer based applications;
Produce drawings using an CAD programme;
Select and produce appropriate computer based drawings in relation to the context and information required;
Display a foundational understanding of desktop publishing and CAG software;
Work independently in response to a design brief using computer based programmes;
Recognize the role of help features in relation to learning and using computer based programmes.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must have an 80% attendance or better at all timetabled classes. Students must achieve at least a D3 grade. Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
