Short Description
This course introduces the foundational principles of learning and teaching within the Scottish education context. Students begin to connect theory and practice in both university and school/ early years placements with a focus on developing observations skills and professional dialogue. Emphasis is placed on familiarising, interpreting and engaging with the GTCS Standards for Provisional Registration with a focus on and reflecting on professional values.

5 weeks of placement in a primary school/early years setting.

Assessment
50%: Teacher report demonstrating appropriate competence in meeting aspects of the GTCS Standards for Provisional Registration.
50% Portfolio containing observations and reflections that demonstrate understanding of learning taking place.

Course Aims
This course aims to provide opportunities for students to develop skills, knowledge and dispositions as reflective educators who thoughtfully observe learning environments and the development of learners. Students will begin to familiarise themselves with safeguarding principles and they will reflect on the ethics of working with young children with a focus on developing their observational skills. Learning conversations will be promoted in order to build students' reflective practice.
