Short Description

The 'Being and Becoming' strand of courses on the MEduc is designed to support students in their development as caring, reflective, enquiring and critically-conscious teachers of children and young people in accordance with the criteria articulated in the Standards for Provisional Registration (General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS), 2021). Through the courses students will develop understandings of, and create connections between themselves, their identity and their positionality exploring their evolving 'way of being' as teachers and how this influences their professional practice and values. Each year's course will include content related to the broad themes of flourishing, inclusion and social justice as students explore further the various and diverse realities which impact the learning environment. In Being and Becoming 1 we will focus on positioning the self within Scottish education with an emphasis on the role of the teacher and broad definitions of key concepts around inclusion and social justice.

Assessment

Assessment

This course will be assessed by means of a written assignment (70%, 1400 words). This will be a personal reflection using Korthagen's 'onion model' to chart their evolving reflections on core concepts discussed in the course. The second part of the assessment will be a presentation on a metaphor on 'being a teacher' (600 word equivalent).

Course Aims

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the skills and knowledge involved in developing a critical, analytical and reflective stance. They will reflect on the dispositions needed to ensure that learners flourish in their learning environments. Students will have opportunities to challenge personal assumptions, values and beliefs about learning and education as well as make connections between core concepts around inclusion and social justice and their own development as a learner through personal and professional reflection.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate a reflective and enquiring stance towards their evolving identity as educators

2. Explain how previous learning and experiences shape personal and professional identity and values

3. Demonstrate an initial understanding of key themes around inclusion and social justice in the current Scottish educational context
