Short Description

This course allows students to explore aspects of the Catholic Theological Tradition and show a personal understanding in the context of teaching Religious Education. The key areas of the course are: the role and purposes of the sacraments in Catholic Theology, principles of Catholic moral teaching, the role and purpose of liturgy in Catholic Theology and the characteristics of contemporary Catholic education in both national and international context.

Timetable

Students should normally expect to complete CREDL 1 and CREDL 2 in one academic year commencing in September.

Requirements of Entry

Applicants should normally hold a teaching qualification or be a student on a programme of initial teacher education. Students will normally have completed Course 1.

Assessment

A final essay will demonstrate understanding of the theological areas studied in the context of the teaching of RE.

Course Aims

■ to offer participants a broad awareness of the link between theological understanding and the teaching of Religious Education in Catholic schools;

■ to encourage a critical awareness of appropriate theological language in the teaching of Religious Education in Catholic schools;

■ * to allow participants to develop the intellectual knowledge and thinking skills necessary to become an effective teacher of Religious Education in Catholic schools. * for CTC only

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Explore the role and purpose of the sacraments in Catholic theology

■ Explain the role and purpose of liturgy in Catholic theology

■ Demonstrate a critical understanding of the principles of Catholic moral teaching

■ Identify the essential characteristics of contemporary Catholic education in both national and international contexts.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must complete at least 75% of the course formative assessment tasks and successfully complete the assignment.
