The first year school placement is a five week practical placement in a Primary School. The emphasis in this placement will be on observation, basic communication skills and skills in planning, preparation and assisting the teacher in the classroom.
Requirements of Entry
Satisfactory attendance (80% or more) at preparation for teaching sessions within Teacher Education 1.

Successful completion of the placement requires 90% attendance at the school, as per GTCS requirements, satisfactory completion of all tasks outlined in Primary School Workbook, including a full School Experience Record, a satisfactory report from both the school and visiting tutor.
Main Assessment In: April/May
The School Experience Placement will:
■ Provide a practical and professional context for learning and development
■ Provide a context for reflection on action
■ Develop understanding in students of skills required to support pupils' learning
■ Provide opportunities for working with school colleagues
■ Develop awareness of working within the ethos of a Catholic school for those who require it
■ Prepare students for employment as professional educators
The intention is that students will observe at first hand classroom methods and organisation in the primary context thus bringing into play the linked skills which they have begun to develop in Teacher Education and Religious Education. Students will begin to have insights into the complexity and management of the primary school and its curriculum. It is expected that students' role will not be passive and that they will 'assist' the classroom teacher in the exercise of their duties.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ Observe and record practical teaching skills
■ Demonstrate familiarity with school policies and practices
■ Demonstrate skills in classroom management, communication, and co-operation with classroom professionals
■ Demonstrate knowledge of teaching and learning, including planning and preparation of lessons
■ Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of relevant areas of school curricular documents and their implementation in the classroom, including literacy, numeracy, health and well being
■ Reflect on improving practice
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Satisfactory attendance at placement (90% minimum, as per GTCS requirements); satisfactory completion of all school based tasks including school experience record; satisfactory reports from school partners and visiting tutors.
